About the URL Encoder / Decoder

Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) can only be sent over the Internet using the ASCII character-set. If a URL contains characters outside the ASCII set, the URL must be converted. URL encoding converts unsafe characters into a "%" followed by two hexadecimal digits. Use our tool to safely encode or decode any string.

How to URL encode a value

  1. Paste the text or URL component into the input area.
  2. Choose Encode to percent-escape characters or Decode to turn an encoded value back into text.
  3. Copy the result into the query parameter, form body, or test case that needs it.

Examples and worked results

Query value with spaces

Input
search cats & dogs
Result
search%20cats%20%26%20dogs

This is component encoding. Encoding an entire URL can also escape delimiters such as /, ?, and & that should usually remain structural.

Percent encoding and URL structure

The tool uses JavaScript encodeURIComponent and decodeURIComponent, which are intended for individual URL components. A complete URL is made of components with different roles, so encode a query value or path segment rather than blindly encoding a whole URL you still need a browser to parse.

Common use cases

  • Preparing search terms and form values for query strings
  • Debugging redirect and callback URLs
  • Inspecting percent-encoded spaces and reserved characters

Important notes and limitations

  • The decoder reports an error for malformed percent sequences.
  • Encoding a full URL with the component function may change URL separators and make it unusable as a complete address.
