About the Merge PDF

Combine two or more PDF files into one document directly in your browser. Add files, review their page counts, move whole documents into the required order, and choose the output filename before merging. VoltUtils copies PDF pages without turning them into images, so page sizes, orientation, text, and vector content are retained where the PDF library supports them. Files are not uploaded or sent to an API. Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked before use, and specialised document features such as forms, outlines, attachments, signatures, or interactive actions may not survive a merge unchanged.

How to combine PDF files

  1. Choose or drop two or more PDF files. Each accepted document shows its page count and size.
  2. Use Move up and Move down to place whole documents in the exact order you want.
  3. Remove any unwanted document and add more PDFs if needed.
  4. Edit the output filename, then choose Merge PDFs.
  5. Check the final page count and size before downloading the merged PDF.

Examples and worked results

Combine a report and appendices

Input
01-cover.pdf · 1 page
02-report.pdf · 12 pages
03-appendix.pdf · 4 pages
Result
merged.pdf · 17 pages

The numbered file list determines the complete page order.

Correct a reversed selection

Input
invoice.pdf followed by cover-letter.pdf
Result
Move cover-letter.pdf up, then merge

Reordering moves every page in that source PDF as one block.

Page copying without image conversion

After filename, media-type, size, and PDF-header checks, the browser parses each document with a lazily loaded PDF library. This confirms the file can be read and supplies the actual page count. Parsed documents are retained only for the current tool session so the merge does not need to parse every file a second time.

When you merge, a new PDF is created and every page is copied from each source in the numbered document order. This is structural page copying, not screenshotting or rasterisation. Page dimensions, orientation, text, vectors, and embedded page images are therefore retained where the library supports them.

No PDF bytes are sent to VoltUtils, a conversion API, or cloud storage. The browser does not render or execute PDF content. Clearing the tool, leaving the page, or refreshing releases the in-memory source documents and result.

Common use cases

  • Combining a cover letter with a report
  • Joining scanned chapters into one file
  • Appending supporting documents to an application
  • Collecting invoices or receipts into one PDF
  • Putting a report and its appendices in a clear order

Important notes and limitations

  • The tool reorders whole PDFs and does not select, delete, rotate, or rearrange individual pages.
  • Password-protected and encrypted documents are rejected and must be unlocked elsewhere first.
  • Forms, outlines, attachments, layers, digital signatures, and interactive document features may not be preserved or remain valid.
  • The selection is limited to 15 files, 25 MB per file, 100 MB in total, and 500 pages to reduce browser memory pressure.
  • Creating the output rewrites PDF structures, so the downloaded byte size can differ from the sum of the sources.
  • Very complex PDFs can still exceed a mobile browser’s available memory even when they are within the displayed limits.

Practical tips

  • Name files with numeric prefixes before adding them when you already know the required order.
  • Check the page count and open the downloaded document before deleting any originals.
  • Use smaller batches on older phones and tablets.
  • Keep original PDFs when forms, signatures, attachments, or archival properties matter.
  • Unlock protected documents only with software and credentials you trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I merge PDF files?

Add at least two PDFs, use the Move up and Move down controls to set their order, choose Merge PDFs, then download the finished document.

Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?

No. File checks, PDF parsing, page copying, and output creation happen locally in your browser. VoltUtils does not upload the document contents.

Can I change the order before merging?

Yes. Every file has keyboard-accessible Move up and Move down controls. The numbered list is the exact order used in the merged PDF.

Can I add more PDFs after the first selection?

Yes. Choose Add PDFs to append more documents, then reorder or remove any file before merging.

Does merging reduce PDF quality?

The tool copies PDF pages rather than rasterising them into images. Existing text, vectors, images, page dimensions, and orientation are retained where the PDF library supports them.

Can it merge password-protected PDFs?

No. Unlock or decrypt a password-protected PDF in software you trust before adding it. The tool never asks for or stores PDF passwords.

What happens if one PDF is corrupt?

The unreadable file is rejected with its filename while already accepted PDFs remain in the list, so one bad file does not discard the valid documents.

What are the file and page limits?

One merge can contain up to 15 PDFs, each no larger than 25 MB, with at most 100 MB and 500 pages across the full selection.

Will forms, bookmarks, links, and signatures remain intact?

Basic page content is copied, but specialised structures such as forms, document outlines, attachments, digital signatures, and some interactive actions may not be preserved or remain valid. Check the result before relying on it.

Does the tool execute scripts inside a PDF?

No. VoltUtils does not render or run PDF content. It parses the file structure and copies pages into a new document.

Can I merge PDFs on a phone or tablet?

Yes, in a current browser with enough available memory. Smaller batches are more reliable on memory-constrained devices.

Why did the download size change?

Creating a new PDF rewrites document structures and may apply different object compression. The visible page content can remain the same while the byte size changes.

Can I choose the output filename?

Yes. Edit the Output filename field before merging. The tool removes unsafe filename characters and ensures the download ends in .pdf.

Does the tool split pages or let me select individual pages?

No. This version merges every page of each selected PDF and reorders whole documents only.
